I try not to look when I drive past your house
In hopes I’ll forget what it looked like
Or the cold touch of the countertop
Where I’d perch to see you eye to eye
If I could find another space that felt the same
I’d pretend it was never there in the first place
The glove compartment hasn’t opened in a while
I forget what could be inside
Probably not much more than the paper that cleaned up
The coffee you spilled on the passenger side
If it didn’t tint the fabric such a dark shade
I’d pretend it was never there in the first place
And I get it up I get it all out of the way
Try not to act stunned when I think I see your face
But every body without yours is just a torso all the same
Pick myself up just to watch them walk away
Did you notice that they cut down all the trees?
By the ravine just to put up more concrete
And it’d be a good excuse to call you up and ask what’s new
But I know it’s a disguise you’d see right through
And I get it up I get it all out of the way
Try not to act stunned when I think I hear your name
But every voice that isn’t yours speaks the words all the same
Pick myself up just to hear them fade away
Pick myself up watch them all walk away

You touch me I feel my cheeks run red
You said if you were a painter I’d be the canvas
Thin veins keep a pulse no exception
A monorail with no plan or direction
I don’t know where I’ll end up if I follow you
If you circle the drain I guess I will too
Because you didn’t sever the fingers we crossed
And without that guidance I’m completely lost
The air above my head is feeling stagnant
I always thought we’d go together the way we planned it
And someday I’ll forget how the cold wind flushed your face
Until then I’ll see you in everything
Days flash ahead and I watch the time lapse
I guess that one night was just another relapse
In your judgement and my mind escaping me
Started writing you some words
Couldn’t get past the first three

Speed River

Lately everything’s looking smaller
Happiness is labeled over the counter
Who’s been keeping score is it a home game?
I just can’t remember those things anymore
I knew she’d told me her name within the hour
But I had to get out the air was going sour
Bright lights dance on bodies as they dissipate
The world returns tomorrow it’s my turn to wait
The last time I tried to set fire
I dropped the matches into the Speed River
Either force of habit or of nature
I’ll never know if it was worse or better
